Looking for fresh April flowers in Portland? At Kvetka Flower, we work with local Oregon growers to bring you the best seasonal blooms available this month. April in the Pacific Northwest is when spring hits its absolute peak –and if you love unique c=varieties and fragrant blooms, this is your month!
April brings those gorgeous sunny days that make you remember why you live in Oregon –so many greenery and gorgeous blooming trees with delicate ruffle petals are now everywhere! Walking around the city in April means being surrounded by the most incredible fragrance from blooming lilac bushes, cherry blossoms, and flowering plums. It's intoxicating, it's nostalgic, and it's absolutely what April is all about in the Pacific Northwest.
Late April is also when wedding season kicks into high gear for Portland florists. The combination of perfect weather (mostly!), great flower availability, and that fresh spring energy makes this one of the busiest and most exciting months in our studio. Here's what's flourishing right now in Oregon and how we incorporate these seasonal flowers into our European-style wedding bouquets and arrangements.
Star Flowers of April
1. Lilacs - The Scent of Spring in the city
If there's one flower that absolutely has stolen my heart, it's lilac. These fragrant blooms where everywhere in my hometown (Mogilev, Belarus), and it’s always such a bittersweet nostalgia to see it here in Portland. Local lilacs is truly beautiful, and you could absolutely see it everywhere around the city –in gardens, parks, along streets –and the scent is absolutely magical!
- From: Local Portland growers, Oregon farms, and Pacific Northwest growers
- Varieties: Common purple lilac (the classic, smaller blooms), white lilac (so elegant), light pink varieties, and the stunning deep purple 'Ludwig Spaeth'
- Colors: Purple (from light lavender to deep violet), white, and pink
- Care tips: Care tips: Lilacs are thirsty! Crush or split the woody stems, remove ALL the leaves (they steal water from the blooms), and change water daily. They last 5-7 days with proper care.
European styling tip: We treat lilacs as the star of arrangements, not just filler. Create abundant, fragrant bouquets using multiple lilac colors, or pair purple lilacs with white ranunculus and soft greenery for a classic spring wedding look. We let lilac branches maintain their natural shape and movement rather than forcing them into rigid structures.

2. Butterfly Ranunculus - Romance Meets Texture
While standard ranunculus are gorgeous (and still going strong in April!), butterfly ranunculus are on another level. These varieties have smaller blooms with more open, ruffled petals that create incredible texture and movement.
- From: Peterkort Roses, Dragonsong Flower Farm, Crowley House, and other local growers
- What makes them special: More blooms (spray variety), more petals, more ruffles, more movement! They look like ranunculus met a garden rose and created something even more beautiful.
- Colors: Full spectrum –soft pastels (blush, peach, cream), vibrant colors (coral, hot pink, burgundy), and those gorgeous neutral tones (champagne, toffee, mauve)
European styling tip: Butterfly ranunculus shine in monochromatic arrangements where you can really appreciate their texture. Try an all-blush bouquet with varying shades, or mix burgundy butterfly ranunculus with deep purple stock for a rich, romantic palette. We also love using them as perk flowers in bridal bouquets paired with local lilac branches and hellebore.

3. Matthiola (Stock) - Fragrant Spring Spires
Stock flowers are seriously underrated! These fragrant spires add height, texture, and one of the most beautiful scent to spring arrangements. In European floristry, stock is a classic spring flower that we use abundantly.
- From: California and local Oregon/Washington growers
- Colors: Soft pink, lavender, white, cream, burgundy, and coral
- Why we love them: That cottage garden vibe! Stock adds vertical interest and movement while filling arrangements with fragrance
- Vase life: 7-10 days, and they often continue opening new blooms along the stem
European styling tip: Stock works beautifully in garden-style arrangements where you want height and airiness. We use them to create natural, asymmetrical shapes in bridal bouquets and wedding centerpieces. Pair lavender stock with butterfly ranunculus and white tulips for a soft spring palette, or use burgundy stock with coral ranunculus for warmth and depth.

How to revive wilting lilacs or drooping lilacs?
If your lilacs look sad and droopy, don't give up! Here's the hot water revival trick that actually works. Start by boiling water in a kettle, then make a fresh angled cut on each stem. Place the stems in 1-2 inches of hot water for 1-2 minutes, making sure to protect the blooms from the steam. After this hot water bath, make another fresh angled cut and split the stem ends with your shears. Immediately place them in a tall vase with lots of cold fresh water. This hot water technique opens up the woody stems and helps revive drooping lilacs quickly - your wilting lilacs should perk up within a few hours!
Keep them fresh longer: Place lilacs in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, change water daily, and recut stems every 2-3 days. The scent is strongest when they first open.
