January Flowers in Oregon: Tulips, Ecuadorian Roses & Lilies
Share
Looking for fresh January flowers in Portland? At Kvetka Flower, we work with local Oregon growers to bring you the best seasonal blooms available this month. January in the Pacific Northwest is a quiet, contemplative time in the flower world, but it holds unexpected beauty that we absolutely love working with!
While most of the winter months look like "another rainy day with gloomy sky" (Portlanders know - if you don't like the weather, just wait 15 minutes... you'll get more rain!), we're always here to add some color to your interior and decorate your space with early bloomers. January is also the time when we turn to the incredible flower farms of Holland, Ecuador, and Latin America to bring you blooms that simply aren't available locally this time of year. Here's what's flourishing right now around the world, and how we incorporate these flowers into our European-style arrangements with those moody winter vibes and neutral tones we're obsessed with.
Why Imported Flowers in Winter?
Let's be real. While we prioritize local flowers whenever possible (and we absolutely do during spring, summer, and fall!), winter is a different story. Oregon's outdoor gardens are sleeping, and while our greenhouses provide some options, the variety is limited.
This is where the global flower market becomes essential. Flowers are flown in from Holland (which has INCREDIBLE greenhouse operations - they've been perfecting it for centuries!), Ecuador (where high-altitude farms produce the world's best roses), Colombia, and sometimes even Japan for specialty blooms. These flowers are harvested at their peak, carefully packed, and air-freighted to ensure they arrive fresh and beautiful. Plus, Dutch growers have mastered the art of winter greenhouse cultivation. We talked more about our local sourcing in our December flowers guide. It's sustainable in its own way - we're sourcing flowers that thrive in winter conditions rather than forcing summer blooms.
Star Flowers of January
Hellebores - Winter Jewels

Often called "Christmas roses" or "Lenten roses," hellebores are January's absolute treasure! These early bloomers thrive in Oregon's cool, damp winter weather and offer an ethereal, nodding beauty unlike any other flower. We get SO excited when hellebores start showing up - they're delicate, romantic, and have this almost otherworldly quality.
- From: Local growers and specialty nurseries
- Colors: White, cream, deep purple, pink, green-tinged, speckled - honestly, every hellebore feels unique
- European styling tip: Hellebores have delicate, downward-facing blooms that we showcase in low arrangements or floating in shallow bowls. Their subtle beauty embodies the European aesthetic of understated elegance. Love clean water and enough hydration, make sure to make a fresh cut regularly.
Ranunculus - Greenhouse Treasures

Greenhouse-grown ranunculus hit their stride in January, offering lush, romantic blooms when outdoor gardens sleep. These are what we call our "winter workhorses" - reliable, gorgeous, and endlessly versatile.
- From: Holland
- Colors: Full spectrum from soft pastels to deep jewel tones
- European styling tip: We use ranunculus abundantly, clustered together for maximum impact, often in tonal palettes rather than rainbow mixes. Think all blush, all burgundy, or beautiful ombré from cream to deep wine. Our special love – pom pom and butterflies varieties!
Ecuadorian Roses - Luxury Winter Blooms

January is when we really appreciate the incredible quality of Ecuadorian roses! These are not your average roses - they're larger, have longer stems, and come in the most incredible varieties with unique colors you won't find anywhere else.
- From: Ecuadorian farms (including Tessa, Rosas Del Corazon, and EcoRoses farm)
- Our favorite varieties: Toffee (caramel and cream tones - SO romantic), Quicksand (that perfect dusty mauve-pink), Barista (rich coffee and cream colors), Miss Piggy and Hermosa (soft peachy-pink)
- Why we love them: These specialty roses have this vintage, romantic quality that photographs beautifully and feels totally unique. Available in long stems up to 100cm and shows great vase life – up to 14 days in some varieties (including Nina, Toffee, and Quicksand)
- European styling tip: We use these beauties as statement flowers, letting their unique coloring shine. Love to reflex them and pair with seasonal greenery – perfect statement piece for any occasion and vision!
Anemones - Bold Winter Drama

While ranunculus give us romance, anemones bring the drama! Those dark centers create such striking contrast, and they photograph beautifully.
- From: Holland
- Colors: White, pink, burgundy, purple - all with those gorgeous dark centers
- European styling tip: Mix them with softer blooms for contrast, or go all-in on anemones for a bold, graphic look. We love pairing them with soft greenery to let those striking blooms really pop. Keep in mind that anemones open pretty quick and usually last 3-4 days!
Also Available This Month
January's flower selection is more limited than summer months, but what's available is so special! Here's what else we're working with:

Lilies from Peterkort Roses:
We're so lucky to work with Peterkort, our local Oregon greenhouse grower! Their lilies are absolute showstoppers in January:
- Rose Lilies (our favourite variety): These are stunning! Usually come in soft colors with delicate fragrance. Last long enough and perfect for mono-arrangement or paired with reflexed roses.
- Asiatic Lilies: Bright, cheerful, and perfect for adding pops of color to winter arrangements. These are the classic upward-facing lilies in vibrant oranges, pinks, yellows, and whites. They're also fragrance-free, which is perfect for people sensitive to scents!
- Why we love Peterkort lilies: Supporting local growers, incredible quality, stems that last 10-14 days, and they're grown right here in Oregon!
Tulips - Early Winter Varieties:
January tulips are mostly imported from specialty growers, and we get some unique varieties:
- French tulips: Longer stems, more elegant than your typical tulip
- Parrot tulips: Ruffled, feathery petals that look almost like peonies - so romantic!
- Single and double varieties in colors from pure white to deep burgundy
- Why tulips in January? They bring that hint of spring when we need it most, and they have incredible movement as they continue to grow and bend in the vase. Limited availability from local growers (Hubrich farms)

Other exported beauties:
Ranunculuses and anemones (already in season, shipped from Holland), standard roses and garden spray roses (local when possible, but most of the winter imported from Latin America and Holland), lisianthus (delicate and rose-like), carnations (specialty varieties - think Green Trick or Antique varieties), and sweet peas when we can get them (shipped from Japan and Holland, the fragrance is unreal!).
Greenery & texture:
This is where Oregon really shines! Silver dollar eucalyptus, seeded eucalyptus, spiral eucalyptus, evergreen branches (cedar, pine, fir - still abundant and aromatic), magnolia branches (so architectural!), dried cotton and allium heads, pussy willow (early textured branches that hint at spring), and olive branches.
Special mentions:
Paperwhites and narcissus (forced bulbs with the most beautiful fragrance), nerine (occasionally available and heavenly), and juniper (winter fragrance).
Design Ideas for January
"Fresh Start"

Crisp white ranunculus and paperwhites with silver-dollar eucalyptus and delicate greenery. This clean, fresh palette embodies the feeling of a new year and new possibilities. Perfect for your home or office to begin the year with intention. We love this arrangement for people who are decluttering, starting new projects, or just want that "clean slate" energy.
"Moody Winter Romance"
Caramel toffee roses and deep purple anemones paired with moluccella, anthuriums, and textured greenery. January doesn't have to be all bright and cheerful - this palette embraces the cozy, introspective quality of winter with European-style depth and drama. Add candlelight and you've got the perfect intimate dinner setting.
"Texture Study"

Sometimes it's not about the blooms - it's about form and texture. Mix pussy willows, magnolia branches, multiple varieties of eucalyptus, and maybe just a few perfect ranunculus or tulips. Very architectural, very European, very winter.
"Monochromatic Magic"

Pick one color and go all in! All blush ranunculus with varying shades of pink. All white with different textures - ranunculus, hellebores, paperwhites, white anemones. All red or burgundy for maximum drama. Monochromatic arrangements feel sophisticated and intentional, and they photograph beautifully.

From Our Studio This January
January feels like a reset in the studio, and we're here for it! After the beautiful chaos of December holidays, we're embracing the slower pace and the subtle beauty of winter flowers. In January we focus on more neutral tones which speak quiet and feel just right during this slow period of the year when the nature is still sleeping - appreciation for understated elegance.

This is very much in line with our European training, where we learned to honor each flower's unique character rather than forcing blooms into unnatural shapes. We're also loving the creative challenge of working with a more limited palette - it pushes us to focus on texture, form, and the art of restraint. January arrangements feel like poetry rather than prose, you know?
While we could import anything from anywhere, choosing to work with what's actually growing (or what thrives in greenhouses right now) connects us to the natural rhythm of the year. It's a small act of sustainability and mindfulness that feels right for starting a new year.

FAQ
What flowers are in season in Portland in January? January features hellebores, lilies, forced bulbs like paperwhites and tulips, specialty roses, and beautiful winter foliage from local Oregon growers. Our mild climate and incredible greenhouse growers mean we have beautiful options even in winter!
Are hellebores hard to find? Hellebores can be challenging to source because they're delicate, seasonal, and not everyone grows them. We work with local Oregon gardens and specialty growers who cultivate these beautiful winter bloomers. Availability varies week to week, so if you love hellebores, let us know and we'll do our best to source them for your arrangement or event!
Where do you source your January flowers? We work with Oregon greenhouse growers and local farms even in winter. Our commitment to local sourcing doesn't stop when outdoor blooms fade - Oregon's greenhouse industry provides beautiful flowers year-round, and our evergreen and foliage abundance is unmatched. When local options are limited, we supplement with flowers from all around the world – Latin America, Holland, and Japan.
Is January a good month for a wedding? January can be a beautiful, intimate time for a Portland wedding! The cozy, romantic atmosphere pairs perfectly with our sophisticated winter flower palette. Plus, venues and vendors often have more availability and better pricing in January compared to peak season (May through October). If you love the idea of a moody (or fragile!), intimate celebration with unique flowers, January is perfect. See our wedding portfolio.
What's the best way to care for winter flowers? Keep arrangements away from heat sources (fireplaces, radiators, heating vents) and draft from windows, change water every 2-3 days, and trim stems at an angle. Winter blooms like ranunculus and anemones often last longer than summer flowers because of cooler temperatures - we're talking 7-10 days with proper care! Hellebores and anemones are more delicate and may only last 3-5 days, but their beauty is absolutely worth it.
Can I get these flowers for same-day delivery? We do offer same-day delivery in Portland when our schedule allows! However, for specific flowers like ranunculus, anemones or hellebores, we recommend ordering in advance so we can source exactly what you want. Give us a call or check our website for same-day availability.
Do you offer consultations for weddings and events? Absolutely! January is actually a great time for consultations because our schedule is less hectic than peak wedding season. Whether you're planning a January event or booking for later in the year, we'd love to meet with you, discuss your vision, and create something beautiful. Contact us to schedule a consultation!
