How to Choose Your Wedding Venue

Bigger Space = Bigger Floral Budget

The larger the venue, the more flowers you'll need to create a wow effect. An intimate space for 30 guests can look stunning with just one arch. A grand ballroom? You'll need three times the florals — and the budget to match. Think about scale before you fall in love with a space.

Some Venues Are Already Beautiful

Greenhouses, gardens, forests, vineyards — nature does the work for you. You can get away with minimal florals and still have a breathtaking backdrop. But a warehouse or loft? You're starting from scratch. That's a completely different budget conversation.

The Venue's Colors Affect Your Flowers

Red brick, dark wood, white walls — it's all a backdrop for your bouquet and decor. A soft blush bouquet can get lost against dark wood. We always ask about the venue before suggesting a color palette. Bring photos or schedule a site visit together if you can.

Outdoor Venues Mean Flower Risks

Sun, wind, heat — not all flowers can handle it. Peonies will wilt within an hour in direct sunlight. We plan around this: shade, water, timing of setup. Always ask your venue about their weather backup plan and share it with your florist early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the venue affect my floral budget?

Bigger venues need more flowers to create impact. An intimate garden wedding might need just a ceremony arch and centerpieces. A large ballroom or warehouse? You'll need installations, tall arrangements, and more to fill the space.

We always ask about your venue first — it's one of the biggest factors in your floral estimate.

Which venues need the least florals?

Greenhouses, gardens, vineyards, and forest settings already have natural beauty. You can spend less on decor and more on personal flowers like bouquets and boutonnieres.

Industrial spaces, lofts, and blank-wall venues need more — you're creating the atmosphere from scratch.

Should my florist visit the venue beforehand?

Yes, if possible. We look at lighting, ceiling height, table layout, and backdrop colors. A site visit helps us design arrangements that actually fit the space — not just look good in theory.

If a visit isn't possible, detailed photos and measurements help a lot.

What should I ask my venue about floral setup?

Key questions: What time can vendors arrive for setup? Is there a loading dock or elevator? Are there restrictions on hanging installations or using candles? Where can flowers be stored before the ceremony?

These details affect what we can create — and how smoothly your wedding day runs.

Are there affordable wedding venues in Portland?

Yes — and some of them need less floral decor, which saves you money twice. Parks, community gardens, and restaurant private rooms often cost under $2,000. Natural settings like forests and vineyards look stunning with minimal flowers. We can help you plan arrangements that fit both your venue and your budget.
